Ukraine is probably one of the most attractive countries of Europe which has not gained much attention because of its transitory history. Ukraine is a part of eastern European neighbourhood bordering Russia, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Moldova. It covers an area of 603,628 square kilometres. Formerly a part of erstwhile Soviet Union, Ukraine gained its independence in 1991 after the split of USSR.
The history of Ukraine’s past has many significant junctures one of which was the Soviet annexation of Ukraine in 1919 following which the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was established in 1922. It became one of the federation units in the erstwhile Soviet Union. However, after the Ukrainian national representation was suppressed by the soviet army by denying them the right to their language and culture, the Ukrainian nationalist movement came to the fore. During the Second World War, the Ukrainian insurgent army fought bravely with the armies of both, Germany and the Soviet Republic. Finally, the independence for Ukraine was achieved in 1991 afterwards of which it became the second largest country in Europe in terms of its area. Since then Ukraine’s economic and political history has been that of transition from Socialism to Market Economy.
The largest and also the capital city of Ukraine is Kiev which is home to 2.8 Million people. It is the seventh largest city of Europe. Kiev is one of the prominent cultural and educational hubs of Ukraine. Travelling within the city is a pleasure as the public transport system is highly developed here, including Kiev metro. Ukrainian ‘Hryvnia’ is the official currency of Ukraine since September 1996. The history of this currency dates back to 1917 when Ukrainian National Republic declared independence from Russian Empire, the new currency of the state was declared as hryvnia. The currency of Ukraine lost much of its weight during the financial crisis of 2008 and currently the exchange rate of hryvnia is around 30:1 against US Dollar. Cards are accepted across all the cities but keeping a few hryvnia can be handy while travelling to the countryside.

However Russian is the second most spoken language of Ukraine but the percentage of Russian speakers is tiny as compared to Ukrainian. There are other languages as well such as Hungarian, Polish and Romanian which are spoken in small pockets.
