As per the tradition of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, this monastery was originated in the fourth century, and the primary chapel was constructed in 1215. The monastery was previously called Ayrivank which means the Monastery of the Cave. Presently it is called Geghard or Geghardavank which means the Monastery of the Spear. The Geghard Monastery is listed in the World Heritage Site of UNESCO, and it is one of the frequently visited tourist destinations in Armenia.
