The Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre is named after Alisher Navoi and is a leading center for performing arts in Central Asia. The theatre has hosted the performances of many great musicians, conductors, singers, and artists. Classical favorites such as The Swan Lake and Don-Quixote has been performed here along with numerous ancient folk tales.

The Grand Opera and Ballet Theatre is named after Alisher Navoi and is a leading center for performing arts in Central Asia. The theatre has hosted the performances of many great musicians, conductors, singers, and artists. Classical favorites such as The Swan Lake and Don-Quixote has been performed here along with numerous ancient folk tales. The theatre’s building is an impressive architectural monument while its courtyard depicts the national folk art. The building was designed by Academician Alexei Shusev, who is also the architect of a mausoleum in Red Square in Moscow. The construction of the theatre began in 1939 but was suspended in 1942 due to difficulties of wartime but resumed construction again in 1944. In November 1945 the Japanese prisoners of war finished the construction of the building when they were transferred to Tashkent from Kvantun.
